A Garden Born of the Forest
VILLA AUREA

When we began this project, the only thing that existed on the estate was a dense Mediterranean forest. Our client fell in love with the natural surroundings and the location of the plot. Interestingly, it was the garden, not the house, that captivated them, envisioning a space that would seamlessly blend with the environment. With this vision in mind, our mission became clear: to create a unique Mediterranean garden that not only met but exceeded the highest expectations.

The first step was clearing the estate, pruning much of the overgrown Pinus halepensis. The land resembled more of an enchanted forest than a liveable garden. Once the pines were cleared, we began planting native species to breathe life into an authentic Mediterranean woodland. We created islands of vegetation using local shrubs, adding touches of colour among them, ensuring each corner had its own natural harmony.

With the vegetation islands in place, we focused on designing recreational areas: well-integrated pathways, a pétanque court, a volleyball field, and even a small artificial beach. For the latter, we selected a slightly coarse sand, comfortable to walk on but heavy enough to remain in place against the wind, achieving a perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality.

In front of the house, we installed a small grass area. The transition between the garden and the forest was spectacular, so natural it looked as if it had always been there.

At the back of the property, the stone marés walls dominate, so we took into account the harsh climate, especially the intense summer heat. We planted several trees, which over time will provide essential shade, complemented by Pachypodium lamerei, succulents, and cacti, creating a combination worthy of a landscaping magazine.

Finally, to unify the entire space, we installed stabilisers in the soils and parking area, covering them with fine gravel. This choice was essential to respect the natural setting. Any other material would have broken the harmony, and using concrete was not an option in such a rustic and authentic place.
